Car headlights

Knowing when to use your lights keeps you safe — and helps you pass your driving test

Correct use of headlights and fog lights is essential for safe driving, especially during changing weather and low-light conditions. It’s also something testing officers observe closely during the Corrimal and Warrawong driving tests.

At Drivetime Driving School Wollongong, we help learners understand these rules clearly so they can stay safe, avoid fines, and show confident, low-risk driving behaviour.

Why Headlights Matter for Safe Driving

Using headlights correctly helps you:

  • See hazards, pedestrians, and road markings earlier
  • Be seen by other drivers in all conditions
  • Improve visibility during poor weather
  • Demonstrate safe habits on your driving test

When You Must Use Headlights in NSW

NSW road rules require you to turn your headlights on:

  • Between sunset and sunrise
  • Any time visibility is reduced, including:
    • Rain
    • Fog or mist
    • Smoke or dust
    • Overcast or dim light

The simple rule: If you can’t see a person wearing dark clothing at 100 metres, turn your headlights on.

How to Use Fog Lights Legally

Fog lights are designed for severe visibility conditions, such as:

  • Heavy fog
  • Thick mist
  • Dust or smoke

Fog lights must not be used in clear conditions, as they can dazzle other drivers and attract fines. When visibility improves, turn fog lights off and return to normal headlights.
