Understand the NSW “Keep Left” rule so you can drive safely and confidently
Many learner drivers find lane rules confusing — especially when deciding whether to stay left, when it’s legal to use the right lane, and how these rules apply on test routes in Corrimal and Warrawong.
At Drivetime Driving School Wollongong, we help learners understand the NSW “Keep Left” rule clearly and safely, so you feel confident on multi-lane roads and fully prepared for your driving test.
Why the “Keep Left” Rule Matters
Keeping left helps maintain good traffic flow, prevents congestion, and reduces the risk of collisions. It’s also a key element of lane discipline assessed during your driving test.
NSW Keep Left Rule Explained
On multi-lane roads with a speed limit of more than 80 km/h, you must drive in the left lane unless you are:
- Overtaking another vehicle
- Turning right or making a U-turn
- Avoiding an obstacle
- Driving in congested traffic
- Using a special-purpose lane (bus lane, transit lane, etc.)
- Following a “Left Lane Must Turn Left” sign or arrow
If a “Keep Left Unless Overtaking” sign is displayed, the rule applies on any multi-lane road — regardless of the speed limit.
A Helpful NSW Centre for Road Safety Video
The NSW Centre for Road Safety provides a short animated video explaining how to keep left safely. It's an excellent resource for all learner drivers.
Learn Lane Discipline With a Drivetime Instructor
Even though the rule is simple, many learners are unsure how it applies in real traffic situations — especially around busy Wollongong roads such as Memorial Drive or the Princes Motorway.
- When should I move right?
- What counts as overtaking?
- How do I choose the correct lane for my driving test?
- What if traffic is moving faster in the right lane?
Your Drivetime instructor will guide you through real examples so you understand how to apply the rule safely and confidently.
