Night driving city scene

Night driving needs extra skill, calm judgement, and good planning

Driving at night is very different from driving during the day. Visibility is reduced, hazards can appear suddenly, and it’s harder to judge speed and distance. This is why night driving is one of the highest-risk times for provisional drivers.

At Drivetime Driving School Wollongong, we help you develop safe, confident night driving skills so you feel calmer and more in control behind the wheel.

Why Night Driving Is Important for NSW Learner Drivers

In NSW, learner drivers must complete 20 hours of night driving before they can take the driving test. This requirement exists because:

  • Crash risk is higher at night for new drivers
  • It’s harder to see hazards, pedestrians, and road edges
  • Judging speed, distance, and gaps is more difficult
  • Weather and glare from other vehicles can make conditions challenging

Building night driving experience as a learner helps reduce your risk when you move on to your P-plates.

When You Must Use Headlights at Night

NSW rules require that your headlights are on:

  • Between sunset and sunrise
  • Any time visibility is poor, including:
    • Rain, fog, smoke, or mist
    • Very overcast or dim conditions

A simple way to remember it: If you can’t clearly see a person wearing dark clothing at 100 metres, turn your headlights on.

Night Driving in the Illawarra

The Illawarra has unique conditions that affect night driving:

  • Steep escarpment that brings early shade to many suburbs
  • Sections of unlit or partially lit roads
  • Changing coastal weather, including rain and fog
  • Busy evening traffic around Wollongong, Corrimal, and Warrawong

During winter, the sun sets earlier, making it easier to build your night driving hours. Learners who wait until summer often find it harder to complete the required 20 night hours.

How Drivetime Helps You Build Safe Night Driving Skills

In your lessons, your instructor can help you practise:

  • Using headlights and high beam correctly
  • Managing glare from oncoming vehicles and mirrors
  • Judging distance and speed in low light
  • Driving on unlit roads and in wet night conditions
  • Scanning for pedestrians, cyclists, and animals

We support beginner learners, mature-age drivers, anxious drivers, and NDIS participants, always at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.
