STOP Signs and Stop Lines
During driving lessons we encounter many STOP Signs throughout Wollongong and the surrounding suburbs.
Where do we stop at STOP Signs?
The NSW road rules say ‘When you come to a STOP Sign you must stop completely before reaching the STOP Line, and as close as possible to the line.’
Photo 1 shows stopping too far behind the STOP Line.
Photo 2 is perfect STOP Line positioning.
Photo 3 is stopping over the STOP Line, ( a fail on your driving test).
How do we give way at STOP Signs?
A STOP Sign or a STOP Line means you must give way to all vehicles traveling in, entering or approaching the intersection, whether vehicles are turning left or right, or going straight ahead. You must give way to any pedestrians crossing the road into which you are turning.
Giving way at a STOP Sign means the driver must remain stationary until it is safe for the driver to proceed.
The penalties for disobeying the NSW Road Rules at STOP Signs are quite severe and are up to 4 demerit points and a fine.
